SPRINGFIELD Despite a Portland-based development firm’s abandonment of plans late last year, the city of Springfield is still focused on revamping a stretch of the mostly industrial Glenwood community along the Willamette River.

“We’re hoping for a mixed-use development with commercial and office uses,” says Springfield Community Development Manager John Tamulonis. Restaurants and condo development could also be in the cards for the 48-acre riverfront spread between Springfield and Eugene that has been slated for urban renewal funding for more than three years. Eventually, he says, the area could resemble Portland’s Pearl District.

Three sets of developers and a group of property owners have expressed interest in the project, but Tamulonis says the most promising candidates are two Eugene developers, Wally Graff and Greg Vik, whose proposal for a four-star hotel and convention center was initially passed over by the city.
