Laura Salerno Owens, an associate with the firm, was honored with the Member Services Award for helping organize the 2013 District of Oregon Conference. In her role as the Co-Chair of the Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representatives for the District of Oregon, Laura worked with a committee made up of leaders from the Federal Bar Association and the U.S. District Court of Oregon to bring together over 60 presenters to speak at the conference. The Conference, entitled “Innovations in the Law: Science & Technology,” took place at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) in Portland, Oregon, on September 20, 2013 and featured entrepreneurs and innovators from across the country who are using technology to transform the practice of law. Nearly 300 lawyers and members of the legal community attended the innovative and unique event.

Traci Ray, Barran Liebman’s Executive Director, was recognized with Project of the Year Award for organizing and running Oregon’s first Wills for Heroes project, in which 40 volunteers prepared and executed estate planning documents for 100 first responders in one day. The Wills for Heroes program is a Pro Bono project created by the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. Through the nationwide program, lawyers and legal staff volunteer their time to produce wills for firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders. Due to the resounding success of the Wills for Heroes program Traci organized, planning has already begun on a second program, to take place later this year.

“We are very proud of these two for their contributions to these worthwhile projects,” said Ed Harnden, Barran Liebman’s Managing Partner. “It’s great that they – and all of our attorneys for that matter – seek to donate their time in ways that enhance Oregon’s legal community, or assist the legal community in making a meaningful difference in the community at large.”
