Some Eugene small businesses experienced an uptick in sales this weekend, while others blame a major Duck’s home game for low turnout.

At the 5th Street Market — Mindy’s Needlepoint, Melange, and Hartwick’s staff say Wednesday and Friday business was strong, but they all say, along with the owner of Latham’s Luggage and Gift, that Saturday was very slow.

Hartwick’s owner Lisa Hartwick was the only one that said overall Wednesday – Sunday sales exceeded her expectations, and surpassed last year’s Thanksgiving Day weekend sales.

The day after Black Friday is marked as “Small Business Saturday,” but she and Melange’s Martha Harvell say the Duck’s home football game and the beautiful weather were likely to blame for the bad turnout.

Harvell also thinks not enough people knew about the push to shop local.
