Plans for a light rail line to Milwaukie are moving forward with $30 million from the city of Portland. The city council decided to contribute the money from taxes and fees toward the $1.4 billion project.

The 7.3-mile MAX light rail line will include the first Willamette River bridge in downtown Portland in more than 30 years.

The council received a short presentation from former Mayor Vera Katz, who chaired a committee that advises TriMet on bridge planning.

The committee felt strongly that the bridge needs to be beautiful, but was also mindful of costs and the potential that an expensive bridge could mean cutting the light rail line short of a planned endpoint on Park Avenue south of Milwaukie in Clackamas County.
