Greater Portland gained 3,200 jobs in September, while high unemployment continued in rural Oregon.

The urban area’s unemployment rate slid down a notch to 9.1 percent, the same as the national rate, from 9.2 percent in August, seasonally adjusted. About 100,400 people were listed as unemployed and looking for work — 16,600 fewer than a year earlier. 

Gains in educational and health services, construction, and leisure and hospitality outweighed losses in trade, financial activities, and professional and business services, the Oregon Employment Department said in its monthly county-by-county report released Monday.
