The unemployed might get temporary work while extending benefits.
A new bill introduced into the Legislature is meant to help Oregon’s unemployed. It offers extended benefits for unemployed who get into retraining programs. The proposal, which would cost about $90 million, is opposed by Associated Oregon Industries, the state’s biggest business lobby.
Thousands of idled Oregon workers could find themselves working in temporary public service jobs and accruing money for college or job training under a proposal introduced Thursday by Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Democratic lawmakers.
House Bill 3500, introduced in the legislative session’s waning days, combines an idea Kulongoski unveiled last month with lawmakers’ plans to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and those who have entered retraining programs.
