Newport residents are beginning to see financial benefits from the recently completed National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration facility, albeit slowly.

At Carson Oil, for example, the sales increase hardly offsets the 5 percent dip in sales due to the slow economy, said manager Steve Carver, but “every little bit helps.”

John Lavrakas, owner of Advanced Research Corp. in Newport, doesn’t know a lot of people who are getting business as a result of the center yet, he said, but it’s still early.

“It’s going to take time,” he said, “in the next three to five years we will see the fruits of NOAA coming.”
