An increase in lumber exports has given a boost to Oregon mills.

Lumber exports from the western United States to Asia (primarily China and Japan) were up 30 percent for the first four months of this year, compared with the same period last year, said Hakan Ekstrom, president of Wood Resources International LLC, a forest products consultant based in Seattle.

That has given a boost to some local mills, such as Starfire Lumber Co. in Cottage Grove, which exports finished lumber to Japan and Europe. It also has benefited other mills indirectly by shrinking the supply of lumber.
