A Southwest Portland company is cashing in on the revival in popularity of hula hoops as an adult exercise and dance accessory device.

Canyon Hoops founder Ron Klint started the business in 2005 after retiring as vice president of operations for Gerber Legendary Blades in 2001.

He buys 100-foot lengths of black polyethylene tubing, and his crew cuts them to one of four sizes — two adult and two child sizes. The tubes are cleaned and connected into hoops, then wound with colorful tape.

Through a method he prefers to keep secret, the hoops are packed in fairly small boxes for shipping. “One of the biggest challenges in the hula hoops business is shipping them,” Klint said.

“They are popular because they work,” he said. Hooping can burn 400 calories an hour, Klint said.
