Unlicensed vendors setting up shop near Eugene’s Saturday Market raise concern for market organizers and licensed vendors.

Saturday Market’s vendors are licensed and must sell handmade items that are approved by the market’s standards committee. The market carries liability insurance and it provides licensed, bonded security, [Saturday Market Manager Beth] Little said.

Little said she and others are confused about why unlicensed vendors can set up shop at the plaza, but not the licensed vendors from the Saturday Market or its sister market, the Lane County Farmers’ Market, which share the park blocks on Saturdays.

Little said she wants to work with the county to have the Saturday Market manage the plaza area, which could mean putting Saturday Market or Lane County Farmers’ Market vendors there. Or, if sales aren’t allowed at the plaza, to line up more positive, family-friendly programming for the area. Even if some licensed vendors were allowed onto the plaza, there would still be space for free speech activity, she said.
