A senate committee has amended the Metolius bill to override county officials and block new development.

Legislators keep changing their minds when it comes to House Bill 3298. The Senate Rules Committee has added an amendment to the bill, an amendment that designates the Metolius River Basin as an “area of critical state concern.” Such wording would make it impossible to build two planned resorts.

Legislation aimed at blocking the siting of resort developments in the Metolius River area gained new life late Wednesday.

By a 3-2 vote, the Senate Rules Committee agreed to insert language approving the Land Conservation and Development Commission’s designation of the landscape as an “area of critical state concern.” The language took the form of an amendment to House Bill 3298. The committee then voted 3-2 to send the measure on to the Senate floor.
