Banks and credit unions canceled debit cards in droves after thieves installed skimmers at six Michaels stores in Oregon.

Last weekend, Oregonians and their financial institutions began noticing ATM withdrawals of $303, $503 or more popping up in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and elsewhere, sometimes within minutes of one another. These resembled the fraud seen on the cards in Illinois.

In Beaverton, home to two of the affected Michaels stores, detectives last week forwarded 48 debit card fraud reports to the U.S. Secret Service, which is investigating the scheme. Though it doesn’t sound like much, the police department normally handles fewer than 10 such frauds a month.
