The federal government has released the second payment from a grant of up to $3.32 million that was approved two years ago to help laid-off Monaco Coach employees at its Coburg plant and in Hines. The federal government released the first $1.66 million in 2009, with most of the money going to Lane County.

On Monday $1.26 million more was released, all of it to Lane County, to continue services for the former Monaco workers.

“Today’s release of additional funding means that former employees of Monaco Coach will continue to receive case management and training services to help them better compete for new jobs,” U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said in a written statement.

Kristina Payne of Lane Workforce Partnership said an initial round of scholarships had been provided to about 70 former Monaco workers. In September, she said, the agency looked at the results and found that only one person who had signed up for classes using the scholarships dropped out. “That’s unheard of,” she said. “That’s when we realized we had some serious folks in school.”
