The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency updated standards for light fixtures to qualify for the Energy Star label, which could boost business for Oregon companies selling LED lighting.

Effective Oct. 1, in order to receive Energy Star endorsement, light fixtures will need to increase efficiency 30 percent above currently qualified fluorescent-based fixtures. In 2013, the requirement will rise to 40 percent greater efficiency than current Energy Star lighting.

“If this (standard) is well publicized … it would boost the solid state lighting industry,” said Steve Kruss, president of Light-Waves Electronics Inc., a Portland-based distributor of LED lighting.
