Producers, processors and business developers met to discuss the feasibility of a USDA-inspected meat processor on the South Coast.

Only nine processors in the state are USDA approved, with the nearest in Roseburg and Eugene. Legally, meat can’t be sold for retail unless it’s been slaughtered and processed under federal inspection.

Many local meat growers sell livestock to auctions. From there, a majority of animals are shipped to processors out of state.

A Coos-Curry processing plant could save growers money, beef up the local food system, and open an avenue to supply local retailers.
