A group of Portland-based printers have formed the C.C. Stern Type Foundry as a working museum to preserve the art of metal type casting.

“The way letters work was defined by this kind of equipment,” says the foundry’s director Jeff Shay.

“An awful lot of folks have never even heard of the equipment, have no idea that it existed or what it did. But every day, when they’re sitting at their computers, they’re using what is the product of this history.”
