The Oregon Senate voted 28-0 to approve Senate Bill 301, which will give tax breaks to families and businesses.

Families will get tax breaks for education costs and health insurance, and businesses will get breaks for equipment purchases.

An estimated 50,000 filers, based on a means test, can deduct as much as $4,000 in tuition and other college expenses paid in 2010. Teachers can deduct as much as $250 for classroom expenses.

“Legislation like this empowers Oregon’s employers to do what they do best: innovate, grow and put Oregon families back to work,” said [Sen. Frank] Morse, the top Republican on the Senate revenue panel.
