The Eugene-Springfield area has many local chocolatiers who not only survived the recession, but actually flourished during it.

 

The concentration of chocolate entrepreneurs in this area says as much about the entrepreneurs as it does about the community.

“I think Eugene is progressive in that it attracts artisans,” said Mary Jo Stojak, executive director of the Fine Chocolate Industry Association in Seattle, which has about 200 members nationwide. “It attracts people who are looking for a better quality of life. In any of those kinds of communities, people are more open and receptive to the resulting craft that a person produces.”
