Gov.-elect John Kitzhaber chose Curtis Robinhold, a former aide with business experience, to become his chief of staff.

Robinhold, 42, was a natural resources aide during Kitzhaber’s first stint as governor and managed his reelection campaign in 1998. He later left and became a globetrotting executive for oil giant BP, where he helped launch the firm’s alternative energy unit.

Kitzhaber also named eight other top staffers in what were among his first major personnel actions just four days before he takes office. Some critics have said he has moved too slowly in stocking his administration, but Kitzhaber has said for weeks that his past experience makes him confident he will hit the ground running when he takes office on Monday.
