An Alcan Cable plant in Wilbur that once employed more than 170 people closed down last week, citing the down economy for its closure.

Many of the departing employees are planning to leave Douglas County because of the lack of jobs available.

Demand for the product, mostly used in new construction, has been declining for years, [plant manager Sean] Milner said. Offshore competition also damaged the plant’s sustainability.

“The economy has been tough on everyone. We are directly tied to the housing market, which we know everyone is aware has been down considerably for quite some time,” Milner said.
