Amid recent controversies, Haggen Food & Pharmacy pulled alcoholic energy drink brands Four Loko and Joose off their shelves.

“The right thing to do for our communities is to immediately stop sales of Four Loko and Joose, regardless of if or when a government agency bans them,” said Becky Skaggs, a spokeswoman for Haggen spokeswoman, which already had stopped selling the drinks at its Oregon City and Murray Hill stores earlier this year.

Competitor Fred Meyer ditched the cans – 12 percent alcohol by volume, or two times a typical beer – earlier this year as controversies began to arise. Known as “alcopops,” the drinks have been criticized for marketing and design campaigns aimed at younger customers.
