Melanie Scofield opened The Candy Shoppe in Jacksonville amid a great tourist season celebrating the town’s 150th anniversary.

Positive reviews from travel writers may be drawing tourists as well. Frommer’s, the travel guide publisher, named Jacksonville one of its Top 10 coolest small towns in America.

“We’ve definitely seen an increase in tourists,” [Constance Jesser of Jacksonville Mercantile, next door to The Candy Shoppe] said. “I’ve heard from several businesses this summer, who said things are better. A couple of merchants told me their sales are up anywhere from 18 to 20 percent.”
