Nike releases a $1.99 iPhone app that tracks runners times and speeds, a cheaper version of the similar tool the company made for iPods.

The app utilizes the built-in GPS and motion-sensitive accelerometer.

Nike+ GPS can measure a runner’s time against past performances on the same route and connects them to an online community of runners. It urges athletes on with the voices of comedian Tracy Morgan and Lance Armstrong, the cyclist and Nike endorser.

The iPhone already sports scores of running apps — some with GPS — to map your route, speed and distance. And Nike already offers Nike+ iPod, a $29 chip and software that tracks running times and distances on many Apple gadgets.
