Sue Smith, Elana Hoerter and Ben Hoerter grew frustrated with the unpronounceable chemical ingredients in their dogs’ flea medicine, so they decided to do something about it.

They founded Mad About Organics, and now produce shampoo, flea, tick and skin treatments for pets made out of local and organic ingredients.

Once the group found the right combination of ingredients to make what they considered a quality product — “It’s like baking a cake, you just have to remember to write down the recipe,” Smith said — they began selling their product at the Saturday Market.

“We were happy to make $100, now we’re filling $6,000 orders,” Ben Hoerter said. The company’s products are now sold in more than 140 stores in 20 states, including about three dozen stores in Lane County.
