The two solar power manufacturers’ layoffs reflect recent market struggles.
The immediate reason for Panasonic’s 50 layoffs was a slowdown in residential demand from the company’s domestic Japanese market, according to a company spokesman. SunEdison had planned a restructuring after, among other things, its stock plunged last year.
…The moves relate to inventory types. The two affected facilities both produce silicon ingots for use in solar panels. While the bulk of that segment is healthy, according to one industry analyst, it’s not doing well in the U.S.
