Facebook censors Oregon marijuana businesses


Dispensaries’ accounts are removed and locked due to policy violations.

Marijuana business like Cannabliss rely on social media to promote sales, new products and establish their brands in Oregon’s crowded marijuana market. Social media has become so essential for businesses that many have staff dedicated to managing their accounts.

“For a lot of us that don’t have big money, that is the only source of advertising, to get the word out,” said Troy Moore, owner of Oregon’s Finest, which has two locations in Portland.

A Facebook representative on Thursday responded to an Oregonian/OregonLive inquiry about the removal of marijuana-related pages, saying the company’s “community standards” detail “what is and is not allowed on the service.”

Arizona dispensaries are also getting pushback from Facebook and other social media platforms, according to Tucson Daily.
