Oregon credit union bucks trend, serves legal pot industry


Maps Credit Union employs understated approach to serving legal marijuana firms.

Legal marijuana business owners have too much cash and no bank to put it in.

Maps Credit Union is the only financial institution in the state to buck the trend and serve pot firms.

“We don’t want them out spreading the good news I guess,” [vice president of operations for Maps, Shane] Saunders said. “It’s such a weird place to be. Normally you’d love word of mouth. This is one area where we’re not necessarily interested in banking every dispensary in Oregon.”

There are 334 dispensaries registered in Oregon. Maps handles accounts for fewer than 50 of them.

Being featured in the state capital’s newspaper is unlikely to help the credit union remain on the hush-hush.
