Smarsh wants to build a “pipeline” for its Portland headquarters.

It’s opening an office in Eugene to help it reach that goal.

“We need to develop a lot of our own and we’re not really good at it,” he said.

Locating in Eugene, he said, will connect Smarsh to the University of Oregon and the nascent tech scene developing around it.

The new outpost will be located in downtown Eugene.

Smarsh, which was founded in 2001, makes cloud-based software that archives emails, social media and other communications for clients that are in highly regulated industries such as health care and financial services. Through a series of acquisitions the company was briefly part of computer maker Dell until Dell sold its stake to Toba Capital.

This time last year Smarsh moved into its sleek new headquarters in downtown Portland.
