Chewbacca is featured prominently in Portland advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy’s spot for Verizon.

The furry pitchman does double-duty as the commercial for the mobile network also stokes excitement for the new Star Wars coming out next month.

The Oregonian’s Joseph Rose got the story behind the commercial.

W+K creative director Sean McLaughlin said the 30-second TV spot, which debuted Sunday, is part of the ad agency’s “Better Matters” campaign, which uses simple explanations and pop culture to help explain the technical complexities of why Verizon is the best phone network.

“Knowing the release of ‘The Force Awakens’ is going to be huge,” McLaughlin said, “using the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy felt like a timely and fun way to bring this particular proof point to life — the idea that having data available when you need it (when you really, really need it) is important.”

Filmed on the set of “The Force Awakens,” the ad features actor Peter Mayhew, who has played the hairy intergalactic co-pilot since the first “Star Wars” film.

W+K isn’t the only Oregon company getting in on Star Wars madness leading up to the release.
