Spirit Airlines will offer a Portland-to-Los Angeles direct route.

The expanded PDX presence comes as a part of the company’s growth on the West Coast.

The Miramar, Florida-based airline has quickly grown in the U.S. by stripping the flying experience down to its bare bones and adding fees for flyers that want once-standard services like baggage and in-flight drinks.

The move comes amid an ambitious $250 million project to overhaul the Portland International Airport. The airport’s status is rising, reclassified as a “large hub” by the Federal Aviation Administration. Recent flight additions include new service to Dallas, Orange County, St. Louis, Frankfurt, Germany and Reykjavik, Iceland.
