A Coos Bay couple’s insurance battle taught them some lessons that could help threatened oyster growers in the Gulf of Mexico.

After a 1999 oil spill in Coos Bay ruined the Clausen’s oyster beds, they fought a four-year precendent-setting legal battle to recover their losses.

The Clausens say their experience can help oyster growers in the Gulf of Mexico.

They have stayed tuned in to the news from the Gulf of Mexico and wonder why authorities aren’t doing the obvious.

“Why don’t they put the booms out?” asked Clausen. “How can they be so stupid? They have to keep the oil out of the marshes. That is the No. 1 thing. Quit talking and put the booms out.”
