OREGONLIVE.COM: The booming brand was able to sell a new iPhone without lines in Portland.

In Oregon, though, and other states without a sales tax, Apple restricted in-store sales to people with advance reservations. The policy, evidently designed to thwart ticket brokers sometimes called “sharks,”appeared to have the desired effect.

Fewer than 40 people stood in line when the new iPhone went on sale at 8 a.m. in downtown Portland, and few had arrived before 7:30. Within 30 minutes, Apple had the line nearly cleared. It’s a good thing, too, because a steady rain began falling shortly afterward.
