Greenpeace activists suspended themselves from the St. John’s Bridge in an attempt to prevent a Shell Oil ship from heading to the Arctic.
A federal judge later determined the activists would be subject to escalating fines if they did not end their demonstration.
Shortly thereafter, the Coast Guard cleared away kayaks on the river and the police removed two protestors to make way for the ship that was able to depart Portland.
This photo was taken Thursday at about noon, before the protestors were removed.
