Nonprofits sued for misusing veteran funds


The state Department of Justice is cracking down on five different nonprofits for misusing funds intended to help veterans.

The state has sued three nonprofits who claim to use money to help veterans, but are instead using the money themselves, according to the Department of Justice.

Organizations such as the No Veterans Left Behind Association and Associated Community Services are accused of keeping up to 80 percent of the money they raise for themselves.

The state sued the Veterans of Oregon & Members of the Community and its fundraiser, Associated Community Services; Community Support; and the No Veterans Left Behind Association.

[Attorney General John] Kroger alleged that Associated Community Services raised more than $500,000 on behalf of Veterans of Oregon but “little if any of the money benefited the homeless and hospitalized vets that donors were told they were helping.”
