Oregon State University is enrolling military veterans at a higher rate thanks to new programs aimed at student veterans.

Student veterans account for about one of every 25 students at Oregon State. Enrollment of student veterans at OSU has been increasing over the past five years.

Gus Bedwell with Oregon State University says part of the enrollment increase is due to an expansion of federal education benefits that started in 2009. And, he says, soldiers are returning from duty overseas.

“The thing is that, as the wars draw down, and we have soldiers returning home and exiting the military, that’s increasing their need to go back to school because of the high unemployment rate right now,” he says.
