Farwest Steel plans new site in Vancouver


Farwest Steel has selected a site in Vancouver to set up an operation with 225 jobs, after looking in the Portland-Vancouver area for “some time.”

Eugene steel company Farwest Steel plans to set up a new plant in Vancouver by fall of 2011, and has selected land for the 300,000 square-foot building.

Farwest Steel had been looking for a site in the “Portland-Vancouver” area for some time, and it is unclear whether any of its other plants will be closed in favor of the new port site.

The 53-year-old company’s headquarters will remain in Eugene. Farwest does not make steel, but fabricates, welds and cuts steel into various products and parts, including rebar and custom products…

The port was reluctant to sell land in the middle of its territory. But the promise of the new jobs convinced Port staffers it was the right thing to do.
