Senate passes bill to kill Kitzhaber ed board

ASSOCIATED PRESS: The Oregon Senate voted to halt the Oregon Education Investment Board, an entity created by former Gov. John Kitzhaber.

Kitzhaber envisioned the board as a powerful agency overseeing all of education, from preschool through college, with authority to direct money toward the most successful schools. The concept never fully materialized, and the board has many critics who say it’s ineffective.

A bill approved Monday would eliminate the Education Investment Board but retain the staff, including the chief education officer, for four more years. Staff would work on unifying the public education system. The Senate’s 27-2 vote on Monday sends the bill to the House.
