UNION-TRIBUNE SAN DIEGO: Fuel costs rose 42 cents in just a week, marking the biggest price hike in state history.

“The primary catalyst for the aggressive price hikes has been the sharp spike that occurred Wednesday in wholesale gasoline prices, triggered by operational glitches at multiple California refineries and work stoppages by the United Steelworkers Union,” the analysts wrote.

The latest surge has been linked to a Feb. 18 explosion at the ExxonMobil’s refinery in Torrance, which supplies between 15 percent and 20 percent of Southern California gasoline. Another Northern California refinery has been offline since the the start of February. Together, the two facilities account for 17 percent of gasoline production in the state.
