NYT: The world’s top-selling automaker reported sales of 7.615 million vehicles, up 3% from last year.

Volkswagen said this month that it had sold 7.4 million vehicles from January through September, barely edging out General Motors in sales. G.M. this month reported sales of 7.37 million cars and trucks worldwide. Toyota is projecting annual sales of 10.2 million vehicles this year, which would be a record for the automobile industry.

Toyota, the Japanese company that makes the Camry sedan, the Prius hybrid and the Lexus luxury models, is doing well despite difficulties in its home market, where an increase in the sales tax has dampened spending, especially automobile purchases.
