Rail options for the Lake Oswego to Portland Transit Project are being studied.
With Lake Oswego still months away from choosing the preferred route for its transit plan to Portland, options are being studied for their impact on the region.
The idea behind the Lake Oswego to Portland Transit Project is to alleviate traffic on Highway 43 while also boosting economic development on the corridor.
As the Westside Express Service has seen less than desirable ridership numbers, some residents are concerned that the streetcar will see the same lack of popularity. Brant Williams, Lake Oswego economic and capital development director, does not anticipate that happening. Metro’s past projections for the Portland Streetcar and the MAX have been accurate, he said. All of their projections for rail transit have been within 3 percent of the actual services at the time the rail line opened.
Additionally, the projections will be based on the current existing residential areas along Highway 43 but will not include plans for a high-density neighborhood development in Foothills. Williams guesses that the city will see full build out of the Foothills area in 10 to 20 years.
