A Republican legislator urged a cautious reaction in the wake of the Kitzhaber scandal.

Rep. John Huffman (R-The Dalles) said he would not support legislation that didn’t address specific issues, while new Gov. Kate Brown promised to make ethics reform an area of focus.

The Bend Bulletin reports:

“I will be there if I feel there’s a bill that does that, otherwise I’m not going to be there,” Huffman said. “The bottom line with all this stuff is if you’re being honest, ethical and transparent, we’ve got rules in place and it’s not going to be a problem.”

Rep. Julie Parrish, R-West Linn, is working on bills that would tighten timelines public officials have for releasing public records and limit fees for producing the records. Parrish also wants more authority for the attorney general to investigate sitting governors.

“It’s a really big broad package that touches a lot of issues that gets to the heart of what I think voters are really cranky about,” Parrish said of her bills. “These all sort of come from loopholes that need closing.”
