An Oregon Department of Agriculture study said that scotch broom and Armenian blackberries could be costing the economy nearly $80 million.
1. The report, conducted by Corvallis-based The Research Group, estimates that all 25 weed species together result in a loss of $83.5 million in personal income from the state’s economy. That means a big chunk of growers and loggers are missing out on making money on land or crops that are taken over by the invasive species.
2. The Oregon State Weed Board (not to be confused with the OLCC board, which is a different kind of weed board now) has listed 118 weeds as noxious as of December. There are several notches on the “noxious” spectrum, and most of the weeds have minimal impact on agriculture, but are targeted for control when possible.
