Supporters of Measure 92 were forced to give up after the automatic recount showed they were still behind.

“While Measure 92 will not emerge victorious in this election, our growing movement to label genetically engineered foods is neither defeated nor discouraged,” the campaign said in a news release.

After initially failing by 812 votes last month, Measure 92 went to an automatic recount Dec. 2. All counties had reported their results by Thursday afternoon, and the final tally showed the measure losing by 837 votes.
