Delford M. Smith first launched Evergreen Helicopter in 1960.
Evergreen sold its helicopter division to Erickson Inc. in spring 2013 for $250 million. This year, the parent company and several subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy. Smith was 84.
As recently as December, Smith appeared to be in full command of the company. After reports circulated that employees had been told the company was shutting down its cargo carrier, he released a statement calling the “rumor” false.
