In response, the Bureau of Transportation is temporarily easing regulations to make more taxis available during weekend peak hours through December.

Starting Friday, the city will lift such permit restrictions so that drivers can provide on-demand taxi service between 5 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. “This could put dozens more taxis on the roads when they’re most needed,” said Dylan Rivera, a PBOT spokesman.

The seasonal pilot program comes as PBOT prepares a top-to-bottom review of taxi regulations spurred by the rise of car-sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft. It will end on Jan. 2.
