The Hillsboro animation studio agreed to a distribution deal with Focus Features for its next three films.

Focus distributed Laika’s first three movies, starting with 2009’s “Coraline.” The first two each earned Oscar nominations for best animated feature, and grossed more than $250 million worldwide at the box office.

“Boxtrolls” appears to be on roughly the same pace, judging by an opening weekend that produced more than $17 million in sales at the U.S. box office. Production is well under way on Laika’s fourth film, which the studio has yet to identify, and the company has begun hiring for a fifth production.
