Laika’s ‘Boxtrolls’ places third at box office


The Hillsboro-based animation studio earned just over $17 million at the U.S. box office for its new movie, “The Boxtrolls,” on its opening weekend.

The Hillsboro-based animation studio earned just over $17 million at the U.S. box office for its new movie, “The Boxtrolls,” on its opening weekend.

“Boxtrolls” is Laika’s third film since 2009; the studio wants to release a new film annually, and is scouting for additional space in Washington County so it can produce two movies simultaneously.

Nike Chairman Phil Knight owns Laika and his son Travis runs the company. The studio is well into production on its fourth, thus far unannounced project, and is positioning itself to begin its fifth, also unnamed.
