Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, donated $25 million to the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute for patient care and cardiac research.

Providence will use the gift to kick off the heart institute’s $50 million Next Generation campaign, which will create three centers — one for cardiovascular specialty care, another for innovation and research and another for prevention and wellness.

Providence Heart and Vascular Institute comprises more than 80 doctors and surgeons and treats 13,000 patients a year. It’s also the regional hub for a five-state cardiac database, one of the largest in the country.
