The Lake Oswego-based railcar-maker named Jim Cowan its senior vice president of operations.

Cowan is a former CEO of American Railcar Industries Inc., a Greenbrier rival and a company with which activist investor Carl Icahn once wanted Greenbrier to merge.

Cowan will report directly to Greenbrier CEO Bill Furman.

While at American Railcar, Cowan was also known for generating a strong bottom line, skills that should translate to Greenbrier’s balance sheet.

“The addition of a seasoned executive of Jim’s caliber to Greenbrier adds depth to our executive team,” Furman said in a news release. “His international business experience and operations expertise will benefit our entire organization.”
