RevMedx Inc. won U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for the XStat, a device that shoots sponges into a deep wound to stop internal bleeding.

The company plans to make the device available for battlefield use later this year.

“This will be an important new treatment option for our nation’s military to treat injured soldiers who may not be in close proximity to a medical facility,” Christy Foreman, direction of Device Evaluation at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in a statement.
